Bridge (Drop-In)

Love bridge? Want to play more? Join a group of bridge enthusiasts to have fun and develop your skills. This is an informal bridge gathering where we all help each other to improve our game using the standard duplicate bridge format. Instead of getting masters points for high scores…you will get a little cash. The cost is $4 per session, payable in cash at each session. Chess (Drop-In)

Introduction to Chess: This course is designed to teach chess to children or adults who have no knowledge of the game and for students who already know the basics of how to play chess. Students will learn pawn and piece movements as well as the fundamentals of the beginning, the middle and the end game. Students will always touch and use equipment. Part of the class will be board demonstrations and part practical interaction. Eventually, principles of tactics and strategy will be taught to prepare students for more rigorous competition.

All ages are welcome! There is no registration required for this class. Sign-in sheet will be available.

Advanced Chess: Welcome to “Rapid Chess Improvement,” an intensive course designed for intermediate to advanced chess players aspiring to elevate their game to the level of an expert or strong tournament player.

This course is meticulously crafted to provide a comprehensive approach tailored to individuals with good chess experience. Led by chess coach Jordan, this class delves deep into advanced strategies, tactical intricacies, and positional nuances that are essential for chess mastery. Whether you’re aiming to enhance your opening repertoire, sharpen your endgame skills, or refine your middle-game tactics, this course offers a structured curriculum aimed at rapid improvement. Get ready to immerse yourself in a stimulating learning environment where you’ll analyze grandmaster games, participate in challenging tactical puzzles, and engage in strategic discussions, all geared towards transforming you into a formidable chess competitor. Join us on this exciting journey, where your passion for chess meets expert guidance, propelling you towards becoming a proficient tournament player. We will continue to host tournaments and occasionally have local masters occasionally join us for simultaneous exhibition events! (everyone will play the master a game at the same time! Good experience.)

*There will be light homework weekly of playing one classical game of chess of 30 minutes or more with recorded game score, and tactical chess problems to train calculation.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: Beginners and intermediate players are welcome, taught by a Chess Expert. Instructor and Trainer Jordan Constantino has over 20 years of playing and winning local chess tournaments and has achieved a Canadian Chess Federation Rating personal best of 1988. He learned chess at 16 and then won the Grade 10 Chess and Math Provincial Championship, representing Manitoba at the Nationals twice. Jordan has played tournament chess from coast to coast in Canada, and in the United States. Jordan often likes to play chess online these days, 2200-2300+ elo rating strength on major platforms, and occasionally beats a Grandmaster or Internal Master!

Jordan is passionate about the benefits of chess to the developing mind. Recent studies have confirmed what educators have known for nearly 40 years: that chess improves academic performance, concentration, logical thinking, judgment, creativity, problem solving, emotional intelligence, and social skills.

 

French

Over the course of our 10-week class, we will begin our journey in learning some of the basics when conversing in French. From casual greetings to ordering food, to useful travel phrases, join me as we discover the “joie de vivre“ of the French language and culture.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:  Christine Peers is a retired teacher who has taught French for 30 years from grades 3-12. She has travelled to Quebec and Paris with her students numerous times. The joys of learning about the French culture extend far and wide.

 

Men’s Shed

Men’s Sheds is based on a simple concept: Improve our members’ physical and mental health through activities men will actually join.
It’s where you can learn or teach new skills and find new opportunities and interests while making new friends.

A Men’s Shed provides a safe and friendly environment where men can work on meaningful projects. Men work at their own pace, in their own time, in the company of other men.
A Shed offers men an alternate way to reach out to avoid ‘isolation’ while giving back to society.

Spanish Beginner A1-3

If you have a base of the Spanish language with an estimated 20 hours of learning, this is a course for you. In this second Beginner course we will describe the family and their personality. Do you want to express your hobbies and plans for the future? If you are looking for a place to rent or buy, we will describe houses and expressing opinions.

At this level, Spanish language basics are presented to start developing practical language skills: oral, listening, reading and writing, to communicate in everyday situations. Students are introduced to the geography, history and diversity of Spanish American culture in a motivating and encouraging atmosphere.

TEXTBOOK: The purchase of a textbook is not required for this class, however, it is highly recommended that students do obtain their own textbook so that they can more easily study at home with all of the class materials. Many students also choose to purchase the accompanying workbook. Given that the class may be cancelled if enrolment is not sufficient, you may wish to purchase your textbook after receiving notification that the class will run. This occurs one week prior to the first class

She studied Adult and Continuing Education, and Emerging Technologies for Learning at the University of Manitoba. She has taught Spanish at university, high school and adult education levels, in person and online. She currently teaches adults, trains new teachers and develops curriculum materials at Universite de Saint Boniface. She enjoys teaching varied learners and sharing life experiences!

Spanish Intermediate B1-3

If you have a solid base of how the Spanish language works with an estimated 140 hours of learning, this is a course for you. In this second Intermediate course we will talk about sports, give instructions and discuss your favourite activity. Do you want to communicate with Spanish speakers about the current news? Talk about wishes and recommendations?

The courses at the intermediate level will focus on pertinent language points providing interactive activities to continue learning about the Spanish speaking world in an interesting and friendly environment.

Spanish Advanced

You are ready to exchange ideas with peers using your knowledge of indicative (present, past & future tenses) and subjunctive modes with good fluency, and want to expand your knowledge of Spanish language and culture in an enjoyable, friendly setting. At this level you will have opportunities to improve your Spanish language skills to be used in a variety of situations and for a variety of purposes through your personal interests, current events, debates (pro & cons on issues that matter to you), role playing situations, and selected literary pieces among others. Grammatical points will be taught according to students‘ needs in an immersion setting.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: Rossana McCormack is a Spanish Teacher and Interpreter. Rossana was born in Lima, Peru. She got her B.Ed. and Licenciatura at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (PUCP), and her M.Ed. at Gallaudet University in Washington D.C. She has taught Spanish at university, high school and adult education levels. Her experience includes, in Peru she worked in a PUCP/University of Winnipeg Teacher Training Project funded by CIDA working in shantytowns; in Manitoba, she has worked as a Spanish course developer for Manitoba Education as well in the implementation of the Manitoba Spanish Curriculum. She is also a freelance conference interpreter. Rossana was the Honorary Consul for Peru in Winnipeg for the provinces of Manitoba and Saskatchewan from 1998 to 2010. She has been teaching at Creative Retirement since 2002. She enjoys teaching different age groups and gets energized by her students!

Tai Chi

Tai Chi (Taiji) is an ancient internal martial art form which today is mostly taught for its many health benefits. Its slow, deliberate movements engage and unite both body and mind. With regular practice you can improve balance, concentration, co-ordination, memory, bone density, blood pressure and leg strength. You will learn movements with names such as Parting Wild Horse’s Mane, Carry Tiger to Mountain, Wave Hands Like Clouds, Grasp Bird’s Tail that will not only conjure up beautiful images in your mind but also will allow your body, mind and spirit to enter into a deep and quiet place. Please think about giving yourself the gift of Taiji and the permission to learn this ancient art. Wear comfortable clothing and bring soft soled indoor shoes. No scents please. It is recommended that you arrive at least 15 minutes before the start of class.

Yoga Flow

This class is a blend of mobility, strength, stability, and mindfulness. Repetitive flowsa and long folds will work muscles in a variety of ways. This class is geared towards all fitness levels and will focus on postures targeting all major muscle groups

Zumba (Adult)

Zumba takes the “work” out of the workout! By mixing low-intensity and high-intensity movements for all levels! It’s easy to follow along. This is a great way to get your steps in a fun way while listening to Latin and World rhythms. This program is open to all ages 18+.

SCHEDULE: 7 Saturdays, April 6 to June 1 (No Class April 20 or 26), 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM.
