5-8 Year-Old Program: A weekly art class to engage young creative minds with fun creative processes to make all types of art. All experience and abilities welcome!

Classes may include more than one day to create an artwork to expose students to the patience it takes to create an art piece. Some projects may include beaded hanging art, weaving, collage, watercolour painting, sculpture etc.

About the Instructor: Jess (she/her) is a Winnipeg based artist and studio instructor. She completed her BFA Honours at the University of Manitoba in Graphic Design (2011). Her current art practise involves watercolour and gouache paintings that express various whimsical, illustrative, nature and fantasy based themes. While she continues to practice painting and digital art making, Jess found a passion in teaching watercolour and facilitating art classes for schools through the Winnipeg Art Gallery (2021-present).

As an instructor, her main goal is to nurture students abilities and help guide their creativity. She provides a safe and welcoming studio environment for all ages and is eager to tend to individual needs, goals and interests. She creates imaginative projects in a range of mediums to expose students to various art making processes.

Chess (Drop-In)

Introduction to Chess: This course is designed to teach chess to children or adults who have no knowledge of the game and for students who already know the basics of how to play chess. Students will learn pawn and piece movements as well as the fundamentals of the beginning, the middle and the end game. Students will always touch and use equipment. Part of the class will be board demonstrations and part practical interaction. Eventually, principles of tactics and strategy will be taught to prepare students for more rigorous competition.

All ages are welcome! There is no registration required for this class. Sign-in sheet will be available.

Advanced Chess: Welcome to “Rapid Chess Improvement,” an intensive course designed for intermediate to advanced chess players aspiring to elevate their game to the level of an expert or strong tournament player.

This course is meticulously crafted to provide a comprehensive approach tailored to individuals with good chess experience. Led by chess coach Jordan, this class delves deep into advanced strategies, tactical intricacies, and positional nuances that are essential for chess mastery. Whether you’re aiming to enhance your opening repertoire, sharpen your endgame skills, or refine your middle-game tactics, this course offers a structured curriculum aimed at rapid improvement. Get ready to immerse yourself in a stimulating learning environment where you’ll analyze grandmaster games, participate in challenging tactical puzzles, and engage in strategic discussions, all geared towards transforming you into a formidable chess competitor. Join us on this exciting journey, where your passion for chess meets expert guidance, propelling you towards becoming a proficient tournament player. We will continue to host tournaments and occasionally have local masters occasionally join us for simultaneous exhibition events! (everyone will play the master a game at the same time! Good experience.)

*There will be light homework weekly of playing one classical game of chess of 30 minutes or more with recorded game score, and tactical chess problems to train calculation.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: Beginners and intermediate players are welcome, taught by a Chess Expert. Instructor and Trainer Jordan Constantino has over 20 years of playing and winning local chess tournaments and has achieved a Canadian Chess Federation Rating personal best of 1988. He learned chess at 16 and then won the Grade 10 Chess and Math Provincial Championship, representing Manitoba at the Nationals twice. Jordan has played tournament chess from coast to coast in Canada, and in the United States. Jordan often likes to play chess online these days, 2200-2300+ elo rating strength on major platforms, and occasionally beats a Grandmaster or Internal Master!

Jordan is passionate about the benefits of chess to the developing mind. Recent studies have confirmed what educators have known for nearly 40 years: that chess improves academic performance, concentration, logical thinking, judgment, creativity, problem solving, emotional intelligence, and social skills.

Children’s Dance Movement Programs

Children’s Dance Movement Programs provide a space for children to learn about music, rhythm, movement and some basic dance skills. Through musical games and creative movement, each level will focus on different skills geared toward specific ages and gross motor functions.

2-3 Year-Old Program: In this program, the children will be accompanied by their parents as they learn to move. This will be a basic introduction to movements and music with lots of games and fun!

AGE GROUP: 2-3 Years Old

3-4 Year-Old Program: In this program, we will start to work on introductory ballet and jazz steps well still keeping the class upbeat and exciting. We will play lots of music games, and introduce some new motor development skills. This class will not allow parents to participate and is best for children who show an independent interest in the movement. On June 16 there will be a chance for parents to come into the room and watch their children’s progress throughout the year.

5-6 Year-Old Program: In this program, we will start to focus on learning the fundamentals of ballet and jazz with the children. We will work on warming up our muscles, developing an understanding of the dance movements, and some minor choreography. On June 16 there will be a chance for parents to come into the room and watch some mini routines prepared by the children.

About the Instructor: Hi! My name is Nevada Cunningham & I am actually the program manager here at Robert A. Steen. I have a background in business and also have a degree in Early Childhood Education. I started dance at 3 years old through a community centre program and fell in love! I went on to study all styles (Ballet, Jazz, Lyrical, & Tap) through a couple of different dance schools for 19 years! From the ages of 16-19, I ran many youth ballet programs as well.

It is through my passion for childcare and dance that I decided to run a children’s dance movement program. I have used my child development degree along with my dance schooling to create 3 specific classes that will help your child learn to love dance!

Dungeons and Dragons

Beginner Program: Dungeons & Dragons is a popular fantasy tabletop roleplaying game. If you haven’t heard of it before, you may have watched it through shows and movies that have made references to it like Stranger Things or the Hobbit. We’re bringing Dungeons & Dragons as a 6-week program for participants ages 10-15. This program will be led by Tom Unruh, an experienced player who coordinates local games.

Home Alone

Home Alone is a one-time evening course for ages 10 to 12 with the accompaniment of their guardian to provide children with the necessary skills and knowledge to be safe and responsible when being home alone for short periods of time. It will help them understand how to prevent problems, handle real-life situations, and keep them safe and constructively occupied.

Children must have their parent with them to participate.

Kids in the Kitchen

Kids in the Kitchen is adapted from Families in the Kitchen and is a how-to guide that can be used to inspire kids and their families to cook easy and inexpensive meals and snacks as part of a cooking group, and that healthy food should be delicious! Cooking and eating together gives families a chance to connect, plan, and learn from one another. In addition to recipes, each child and their family will come away with tips for food fun, how to make all foods fit and adapting recipes to their own needs – whether that is due to food availability, preference or allergy. Including kitchen skills such as knife skills, from preparation to clean up our goal is for kids to build confidence in the kitchen, and help families work together to have stress free meals!

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: Lisa Wilson is a Registered Dietitian that has worked at Winnipeg Children’s Hospital for over 20 years. She makes her home in Wolseley with her husband, 3 children, 2 grandchildren and boistrous Puggle. Her passion is to increase the cooking skills of all children (or anyone who wants to learn)!

Introduction to Olympic Fencing

Fencing is a modern and exciting sport often described as playing chess while running the 100-meter dash!

Fencing is a sport of skill, speed and finesse in which there is little advantage in brute strength.

*All equipment is provided.

Open Gym

Open Gyms are free drop-ins for families and patrons of the community. Everyone of all ages is welcome to utilize the gym. Independent formal teams will be turned away as this is a space for the individual community members to use collectively. If you require a gym to rent for practice please email [email protected]. Limited equipment will be handed out upon request from the staff as patrons enter. Please be mindful that not all equipment can be given out to prevent injury or damage. We ask that everyone be mindful and care for the gym. There will be no direct supervision provided by staff. Younger children should be accompanied by their guardians. Please wear gym appropriate shoes that leave no scuffs, and do not eat or drink in the gym, unless it is water.

FUNdamentals of Table Tennis

Welcome to our exciting Table Tennis program designed for kids! Table tennis is a lifelong sport that can be enjoyed by anyone, regardless of age, gender, or ability. In our program, you will discover a fun environment where players can learn cool techniques and how to play Table Tennis.

This sport has several benefits: improves hand-eye coordination, mental alertness, and tactical strategy. Plus, you’ll burn calories while having a blast!

Volleyball

Children’s Program (8-12 Years Old): A 10-week program to teach children from ages 8-12 technical skills to play volleyball. 

Please remember to bring no-scuff gym shoes appropriate for the sport, as the facility is not liable for any injury that happens on site.

Yoga Kids

YogaKids is a program integrating reading, storytelling, music, art, yoga, and movement to educate the ‘whole child’ with comprehensive learning. Children learn to stretch, breathe, relax, and enjoy in playful ways. This program sets a lifelong foundation for well-being while helping children build self-esteem.

SCHEDULE: 10 Thursdays, April 11 to June 13, 5:45 PM to 6:45 PM.

AGE GROUP: 6-12

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:  This program is led by Cathy Spack, certified with Calm ‘n Sense Yoga for Kids. Cathy is also a speech pathologist and has run this program virtually during the pandemic in previous years. This program is structured to introduce young children to the wonders of movement, the connection to their minds, and a way to express themselves with all of these things combined. 


NOTE: If you would like to pay by cash or cheque or to apply for a subsidy, please contact the centre for an appointment to register in person. Subsidy is available for children and youth programming only.

All programs are to be reviewed 1-2 weeks prior to the start date to ensure there are enough attendants. Lack of participation will be a cancellation of the program, all registrations will be contacted and refunded in this case.
